Russia in Bloom

Mr. Leonid Parfenov is a well known Russian TV presenter, journalist and author of numerous documentaries, which he produced and narrated. “Tsvet natsii” (Russia in Bloom) is his latest work, dedicated to the 150th anniversary of Sergei Prokudin-Gorsky, a pioneer in color photography of early 20th-century Russia. Prokudin-Gorsky realized the exceptional mission of color photography and, from 1909 through 1915, singlehandedly took on a very ambitious project to document the Russian Empire in its “natural colors”. His subjects ranged from the medieval churches and monasteries of old Russia, to the railroads and factories of an emerging industrial power, to the daily life and work of the Empire's diverse population. The surviving boxes of photo albums and fragile glass-plated negatives were purchased by the US Library of Congress from Prokudin-Gorsky's heirs in 1948. This collection of 1902 negatives and 710 album prints is the only complete testimony of Russia in its bloom. Parfenov and his film crew follow in Prokudin-Gorsky’s footsteps, visiting 12 regions, including Georgia and Uzbekistan, to show the professional feat of Prokudin-Gorsky and to document changes that took place over 100 years, presenting a vivid portrait of a world that’s lost. https://vimeo.com/98734962
